Age-Wise Style: Party Shoes to Keep You on Your Toes

By: Cindy Weber-Cleary

InStyle’s Special Projects Editor Cindy Weber Cleary has been a fashion editor for the past 20+ years. Needless to say, she’s picked up some tricks along the way. Catch her column here each week for how-to tips and style secrets on her favorite, timeless looks.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a stiletto. Nothing can make you feel more powerful or sexy! But, at the same time, nothing can ruin a special occasion faster than an uncomfortable pair of shoes. We have all seen women dressed to the nines who ruined the desired effect by tottering awkwardly and nervously on sky-high heels. And, of course, we have seen all the women who end up in bare feet on the dance floor at a wedding because they couldn’t enjoy themselves in their restrictive footwear! Ick.

Not long ago, I actually heard a shoe salesman in one of the best department stores in New York say to a customer who was trying on a pair of shoes with a heel about 4.5 inches high: “They’re fabulous! They aren’t supposed to be comfortable.” The designer of said shoes, has made similar statements. Easy for them to say! Try walking a mile in them, as the old saying goes…

Towering heels can also seem a bit aggressive. If that’s the message you want to send, go for it! But certain occasions that require you to be on your feet for long periods of time call for a more elegant, understated look, which a graceful shoe with a mid-heel can deliver, as well as a good time (aka no hobbling along painfully, or sitting on the sidelines because your footwear is holding you back).

That is to say, there’s no need for you to sacrifice style for comfort. There are plenty of gorgeous, leg-flattering pumps, sandals, and sling-backs with reasonable heel heights at a range of prices—like the Jimmy Choo pair above ($795; jimmychoo.com). A special fabric or material such as lace, a glittery finish, or a jeweled detail can go a long way. Here are some of my favorites:

1. Miu Miu sling back with Lucite heel, $890; saksfifthavenue.com.

2. Manolo Blahnik gold slingbacks, $645; neimanmarcus.com.

3. Stuart Weitzman metallic pewter sandal, $398; bergdorfgoodman.com.

4. Tabitha Simmons glitter-bedecked leather sandal, $595; saksfifthavenue.com.

5. Badgley Mishka wedge sandal, $215; nordstrom.com.

6. Loeffler Randall black d’Orsay pump with trim, $325; loefflerrandall.com.

7. Zara silver strappy slingback pumps, $80; zara.com.

8. Badgley Mishka ivory satin sandal with jeweled ankle strap, $215; zappos.com.

9. Kate Spade New York black d’Orsay pump, $328; nordstrom.com.

10. Nina bow-back sandals, $99; macys.com.

Now, forget about your feet and get the party started!
