Michelle Obama Made a Very Diplomatic Choice in Attire for a State Dinner

By: Jonathan Borge

Michelle Obama never fails to choose the perfect ensemble for every occasion—and there’s no denying that the First Lady understands the social impact her sartorial choices can have. This is, after all, the woman who selected gowns by a U.S.A.-based designer, Jason Wu, for both of her husband’s inaugurations as President of the United States of America.

Perhaps in keeping with Obama’s understanding of the role that fashion can play in diplomacy, the First Lady arrived at a State Dinner with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and his wife, Akie Abe, yesterday in a gown by Japanese designer Tadashi Shoji. The sleeveless dress, from Shoji’s fall 2015 collection, balanced a cascade of purple tulle with subtle floral detailing. Yes, her selection was beautiful, but the seeming thought behind the selection is what makes it noteworthy. Tadashi Shoji is a Japanese-born, Los Angeles-based designer, and we can’t help but wonder if Obama slipped on the frock as a sign of respect for her guests’ nation—and her own.

Nicely done, FLOTUS.
